The Lion and the Butterfly: Variations on a Theme

Illustration project that was about creating variations on a theme. The two subjects are the lion and the butterfly. The lions are all different, but the shape of the butterfly is always the same.

Images include: gouache silhouette, geometric (pen and colored pencil), pen and ink, colored pencil realism, scale reversal (ink wash), metamorphosis (wet on wet watercolor with ink line), close crop (graphite rendering), historical style (Mucha, goache and ink line), windows (watercolor and acrylic).

I’m loving all of these pictures ESPECIALLY the bottom left corner, so realistic and lovely detail, great job.

i love that you use different media to express your theme! your illustrations are very good, and your inking looks exceptional. i also like your use of dimension and scale in the images. the size of the butterfly versus the size of the lion is very intriguing
